Hello my beautiful people,
After years of free-handing and crafting my own crochet patterns, I'm absolutely thrilled to finally share my very first written pattern with all of you! With summer in full swing, what better time to introduce a quick and easy bikini top pattern? The best part about this pattern is how quickly it comes together, making it the perfect project for beginners! Better yet, this pattern is made to measure, ensuring you get the perfect size tailored just for you.
Before we get started here a quick list of what you will need for this project:
Crochet hook: 2.75 mm
A smaller hook is recommend so that the stiches are closer together, but if you don't have this size you can use a 3.0 mm hook as well.
Yarn: 54 grams of worsted weight (size 4) cotton yarn.
For this pattern I used Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton yarn. I got my yarn from Michael's but you can also find it on Amazon. I used 2 colours, but you can also make this pattern with just 1 colour if you wish.
Scissors
Measuring tape
Optional: Pendant Charm and Jump Ring
Add some flare to your project by hanging a charm in the centre. If you choose to do this you will also need a jump ring. Your best bet to find a charm is to head to your local craft store like Michael's. If you live in the Toronto area, and would like to support a local business you can give this store a try- Arton Beads.
Stitch Abbreviations:
SC = Single crochet
DC = Double crochet
HDC= Half double crochet
Slp = Slip stich
Ch = Chain
*= areas you can customize to suit your size (read the notes below for more details)
Alright, let's get started!
ROW 1:
-Make a slip knot, Ch 4
-Into the very first chain from the hook make 2 *DC
*If you would like to make a stripped bikini you will need to change colours before completing the final DC. To do this start the final DC by yarning over and inserting your hook into the stitch and pull up a loop - you should have 3 loops on your hook. Yarn over and pull through 2 loops- you should now have 2 loops left on your hook. Drop your working yarn, and loop your secondary colour onto the hook and pull through the 2 loops on your hook. If you decided to make the striped bikini make sure to carry the non-working yarn behind your work to avoid having to weave in many ends!
Note going forward, each ch3 counts as a stich. At the end of the first row you should have 3 stitches (2 DC + 1 Ch3= 3 stitches).
ROW 2-14*+:
-Turn you work, Ch 3
-Put 1 DC into every stitch until the end of the row
-Into the final stich (the top of the Ch3 from the previous row) you will be putting 2 *DC
*If you will be making a stripped bikini you will change colours before completing the last DC.
-Repeat this pattern for every row, until you have the *desired length and width. For each row, the total stitches you have should be increasing by 2 each time [Row1 = 3 stitches, Row 2 =5 stitches, Row 3= 7 stitches, Row 4= 9 stitched, .... etc.]
*For a size extra small or small I recommend making at least 14 rows. To determine what size works best for you, you can use your favourite bikini as reference or hold the bikini triangle up to you chest. Please note, that the scalloped boarder will add about 1/2 of a inch on either side of the triangle.
-Lastly, Cast off leaving a small tail (about 2 inches) that you will weave in later.
You will repeat this process for the second triangle cup.
BORDER:
With the right-side facing you, cast on (slp) using your secondary colour into the bottom right corner of the triangle.
-Make 2 SC into the side of each DC up the side of the triangle.
-When you get to the top (the space made from your first increase) you will put 2 SC here.
-Continue making 2 SC into the side of each DC down the side of the bikini
-When you get to the bottom row, make 1 SC along the bottom edge and Slp into the first SC from the begin
-Cast of, leaving a small tail
Repeat this process for the second triangle, this time do not cast off.
SIDE STRAPS & SCALLOPED EDGE:
Now it is time to start on the side straps and scalloped edge. We will be continuing where we left off from the Slp stich made on your last cup.
Strap:
-Ch 135*
*To determine the amount of chains you need to make you will need to measure the distance from your armpit to the middle of your back, and then add another 15 inches to this measurement.
-Slp back down the chain in the back loops only. (To find the back loops you will need to turn your chain around so that the small bumps are facing upwards. It is in those small bumps that you will be putting your Slp into)
-Slp back into the beginning of the chain that you started off with
Scalloped edge:
-Slp into the next stitch
-3 HDC into the same stitch, 1 Slp into the next 2 stitches. Repeat this pattern up along the side of the bikini until you have 2 stitches left before the very top (the 2SC together that you made in the previous row). 3 HDC into the same stitch, then 1 Slp into the next stitch.
-Now you should be at the very first stitch of the 2 SC together. Here you will make 3 HDC into 1 stitch, chain 1, 3 HDC into the next stitch, Slp.
-Continue 3 HDC, Slp, Slp, down the other side of the triangle until you get to the bottom left corner.
Joining the cups together:
-Ch 3*
*you can chain more/less to suit how much space you want in between your cups.
-Slp into the bottom right corner of second bikini top
-Slp into the next stitch
You will then repeat the following steps to complete the second cups:
At the end, Ch1 and cast off, leaving a small tail to weave in later.
SHOULDER STRAP:
Hang on right, we are almost done! Now, it's time to add the shoulder straps! For this part you will need to use strands of 2 working yarn at the same time.
-holding your 2 strands of yarn together, cast on into the Chain 1-space (that we made in between the HDC clusters) at the very top of the bikini.
-Ch 95*
*To determine how many chains you should cast on, measure the distance from the middle of your chest to the nape of your neck and then add about 20 inches.
-Cast off, leaving a 2 inch tail. You can eave the tail back down the side of the chain, tie a knot using the tail to make a tassel, or even string on beads to the end.
Optional: Pendant
If you're looking to make your crochet top extra special I highly recommend adding a pendent to the centre of the chain 3 that you made to connect your two cups!
Lastly, don't forget to weave in your ends!
And that's a wrap!
Which is your favourite?
Banana (cream and yellow)
Cherry (red and pink)
